RSA and ECC Encryption Will No Longer Be Secure in the Quantum Era – Start Preparing Today with PQC Solutions from Utimaco
Quantum computers represent a new generation of computing technology that leverages principles of quantum physics to process information. Their key advantage lies in solving complex mathematical problems at unprecedented speeds—problems that were previously impossible or extremely time-consuming to solve using classical computers. As a result, traditional encryption methods will inevitably be impacted.
Powerful quantum computers, combined with algorithms such as Shor’s Algorithm and Grover’s Algorithm, will be capable of breaking conventional cryptographic systems. They can efficiently factor large prime numbers and solve discrete logarithm problems, as well as significantly accelerate the process of finding encryption keys. This means that asymmetric encryption methods based on RSA and ECC will no longer be secure. Additionally, symmetric encryption methods such as AES will effectively become weaker by up to 50%.
The National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST), a U.S. agency responsible for defining standards and best practices in information technology, has indicated in SP 800-78-5 that RSA-2048 is expected to remain secure until around 2030. While this suggests there may still be approximately six years to transition to more secure cryptographic methods, this timeline is only an estimate.
Quantum computing technology could advance more rapidly than expected, reaching sufficient power and stability before 2030.
Therefore, organizations must begin planning and preparing for the transition to new cryptographic methods starting today.
Recently, NIST announced new standards for quantum-resistant cryptography, known as Post-Quantum Cryptography (PQC), in August. These include three algorithms: ML-KEM, ML-DSA, and SLH-DSA, published under FIPS 203, FIPS 204, and FIPS 205 respectively. This marks a significant milestone for the IT industry in adapting to future security challenges.
