JUNIPER NETWORKS UNVEILS NEW JUNOS® EXPRESS CHIPSET OPTIMIZED FOR TRANSPORT WITH BREAKTHROUGH SPEED AND SCALE
Latest Silicon Innovation Purpose-Built for the Economics of the New Network with Unprecedented Scale of Up to Two Terabits per Slot
SUNNYVALE, Calif., March 3, 2011 — Juniper Networks (NYSE: JNPR) today unveiled its Junos Express chipset, the industry’s fastest and most energy-efficient silicon designed from the ground up for ultimate scale, speed and cost-effectiveness. With unmatched scalability of up to two Terabits per slot, Junos Express is a new class of silicon designed specifically to accommodate today’s escalating network traffic requirements and is the brain which powers the industry’s first Converged Supercore platform, the Juniper Networks® PTX Series Packet Transport Switch.
“With Junos Express, Juniper has set a new industry benchmark for silicon innovation delivering unprecedented total scale with maximum power efficiency,” said Pradeep Sindhu, founder, vice-chairman and chief technical officer of Juniper Networks. “Junos Express is the industry’s only chipset designed from the ground up to power the new Converged Supercore and to recognize and seamlessly process the increasingly differentiated types of network traffic.”
Junos Express is the second chipset in the Junos One family of processors that optimizes Juniper’s innovation and investments in software and silicon. The first, Junos Trio, was introduced in 2009 and powers Juniper Networks® MX Series 3D Universal Edge Routers that enable networks to scale dynamically to support more bandwidth, subscribers and services, all at the same time.
Based on an engineering investment of more than $40 million, Junos Express delivers scalability up to fifty times higher than the leading merchant switching silicon, which powers most core networking platforms today. Built in 40 nanometer technology with 3.55 billion transistors, the chipset is optimized for transport and features the on-chip traffic engineering, full delay bandwidth buffers, algorithms optimized for packet transport and embedded error detection required to support differentiated traffic types and patterns without disruption.
“Juniper has made the considerable investments in engineering necessary to innovate its silicon to serve in this new core transport role,” said Michael Howard, co-founder and principal analyst at Infonetics Research. “We view Junos Express as an advance that makes it possible to build integrated packet optical products in a new way that will allow service providers to lower the costs and complexities of transport while handling enormous traffic growth.”For more information about Juniper’s Converged Supercore, please refer to the following resources:
